Great Dad and kid show Friday Night Lights

A great family show for this Fall (if you have DirectTV) is Friday Night Lights. ; If you do not have DirectTV you can catch up on the earlier seasons of the show with Hulu.com. ;

Friday Night Lights is an atypical show. ; The characters are portrayed as normal people rather than the standard stereotypes found on other shows. ; The dad is a great character, he’s not the dope many shows have morphed fathers into these days. ; The mother is also a strong character. ; The family tackles issues in realistic ways. ; They are not perfect, but they learn from their mistakes. ;

One cool thing about the show is that there is a good movie and a good book associated with the series. The show is based on a great book. ; I recommend reading it. ; The book takes place in the 1980s, while the show (and movie) take place now. ; ; I read the book before seeing the movie, and was surprised how much I liked the movie although it was a bit tamer than the book. ; I was even more surprised how much I enjoyed the series. ; Of the three I actually like the series the best. ;

While I wouldn’t recommend watching it with little kids, there are some grown up issues that are not appropriate for little kids. ; I do think a new Dad and mom are a great audience for the show. ; I also recommend listening to Bill Simmons podcasts about the show. ; Bill is know as the Sport’s Guy, and does a really good job interviewing the creator of the show.
