Colts score with fundraiser

A couple of hundred Colts fans got to spend an evening rubbing elbows with Coach Jim Caldwell and some of his players Wednesday at their training complex on West 56th Street.

Caldwell hosted the annual Colts Celebrity Showdown, which raised money for the Indianapolis chapter of the Carson Scholars Fund. The charity provides college scholarship money for Hoosier students in Grades 4-11 who have a grade-point average of at least 3.75 and perform humanitarian service.

The fund’s namesake, Dr. Benjamin S. Carson Sr., of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, was on hand for the event, which included dinner, a silent auction and a “Family Feud”-style game show that pitted Colts defensive players against offense players.

“To be able to get a professional football team to push academic achievement is really a very important thing,” Carson said. “The Colts were really one of the first teams to recognize this.”

Former coach Tony Dungy started the event in 2005, and Caldwell continued it this year with an additional goal: providing educational technology to community centers for after-school programs.
